Obermeier Hardware Moves Habitat House

Home Given New Purpose

Obermeier Hardware & Rental donates a home and land valued at $77,000 to Spencer County Habitat for Humanity — relocating a structurally sound house rather than demolishing it.

Obermeier Hardware & Rental, a locally owned hardware and equipment rental business located at 822 Sycamore St. in Rockport, Indiana, has donated a residential home and an accompanying parcel of real estate to Spencer County Habitat for Humanity, with a combined value of $77,000. The donation is a direct result of the company’s ongoing facility expansion, which will more than double the store’s footprint.

The donated home, appraised at $70,000, currently sits on the Obermeier expansion site and will be carefully relocated by professional house movers to a property on Vine Street — near the baseball field and just around the corner from its current location. Obermeier also donated the Vine Street land, valued at $7,000, to serve as the home’s new permanent site. The relocation is expected to take place within the next two weeks, the culmination of a partnership with Habitat that has been in planning since last spring.

Obermeier Hardware & Rental is currently undergoing a major facility expansion that will grow the store from approximately 14,000 to 34,000 square feet, with completion projected for late 2027. Rather than demolish the home displaced by the project, ownership worked proactively with Habitat for Humanity to ensure the structure would benefit a local family in need.

Jenny Thomas, Spencer County Habitat for Humanity Director said, “This kind of generosity from a local business is exactly what makes our work possible. Not only are we receiving a quality home, but the land to place it on as well. This will make a real and lasting difference for a family in our community.”
