About Spencer County, Indiana
Established in 1818, Spencer County was formed from parts of its neighboring counties, Warrick and Perry. The county was named for Captain Spier Spencer, an Indiana militia officer who lost his life during the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Though Spier Spencer is the namesake of the county, another famous name graces sites across much of the area. Abraham Lincoln lived in Spencer County for 14 years, moving here with his family in 1816. In Spencer County, a young Abe developed his love of books and learning, discovered his entrepreneurial spirit, and grew into the man who would become one of our greatest presidents.
History isn’t the only thing that runs deep in this area. Spencer County is situated on the Ohio River and its southernmost towns offer some of the most beautiful views of its deep, rolling waters. In fact, the town of Rockport, the county seat, earned its name from the rocky outcroppings along the river.
